Why does the exact Tesla alert ID matter?
Record the exact alert ID, including underscores, suffixes, and companion alerts. Tesla alerts that look similar can point to different modules, timestamps, and service procedures.
What does BMS-F001 mean?
Tesla fault code in the Battery Management System (BMS) module. The battery management system (BMS) has detected that the shunt has experienced an over current (HWOC) event. Be aware that with HWOC alerts there is a possibility that the contactors are welded without a BMS alert. This is because the HV Fuse blows before the BMS can make a calculation.

Affected Tesla Models
What You May Notice
- Vehicle refuses to start or suddenly loses all power
- You may hear a clicking sound from the battery area as contactors attempt to close
- Tesla app shows critical battery alert and vehicle is immobilized
How to Diagnose and Resolve
- 1 Do not attempt to restart the vehicle โ repeated attempts can worsen contactor damage
- 2 Do not connect a charger
- 3 Contact Tesla Roadside Assistance immediately (1-800-333-5080)
- 4 Request a flatbed tow โ do not flat-tow a Tesla
- 5 At Service Center, technicians will inspect the HV fuse, shunt, and contactors for welding damage
Severity Notes
BMS-F001 is classified as a Fault, indicating a critical issue in the Battery Management System system. Do not continue driving and contact Tesla Service immediately.
