Why does the exact Tesla alert ID matter?
Record the exact alert ID, including underscores, suffixes, and companion alerts. Tesla alerts that look similar can point to different modules, timestamps, and service procedures.
What does BMS-F031 mean?
Tesla fault code in the Battery Management System (BMS) module. The Battery Management System (BMS) has detected that the high voltage (HV) battery precharge is over the maximum operating temperature.
Original Description
The Battery Management System (BMS) has detected that the high voltage (HV) battery precharge is over the maximum operating temperature.
Affected Tesla Models
What You May Notice
- Vehicle will not start after charging or sitting in hot weather
- Contactors fail to engage even though battery appears charged
- Touchscreen may show a precharge or battery alert
How to Diagnose and Resolve
- 1 Park in a cool, shaded area and allow the vehicle to cool for 30โ60 minutes
- 2 Do not attempt repeated startups โ this can damage the precharge resistor further
- 3 Try a reboot once the car has cooled: hold brake + scroll wheels
- 4 If the alert persists, arrange for a flatbed tow to Tesla Service Center
- 5 Technician will test precharge resistor temperature and thermal management system
Severity Notes
BMS-F031 is classified as a Fault, indicating a critical issue in the Battery Management System system. Do not continue driving and contact Tesla Service immediately.
